PREP BASEBALL: Lakeland, Lake City split IEL twinbill
COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Landon Puzio singled to right field to score junior Broxton Lukey with the go-ahead run with two out in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Lakeland Hawks past the Lake City Timberwolves 3-2 in the first game of an Inland Empire League doubleheader on Thursday at Lake City High.
Freshman Austin Hocking scored earlier in the seventh on an error to tie it at 2-2 for Lakeland.
Lake City took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as senior Owen Moore scored on an error to make it 2-1. Junior Maverick Lanigan allowed four hits and no earned runs in the first game for Lake City., which committed five errors in the opener. Freshman Brody Weitz struck out six for Lakeland.
"I thought Lanigan pitched well enough to win a game for us, but we can't have five errors with only two hits," Lake City coach Mike Criswell said. "This team needs to put up double digit runs to compete. Weitz had a great outing for them, and they swing the sticks. Al (Bevacqua, Lakeland coach) is doing a great job over there."
In the nightcap, senior Jack Pierce hit a bases-clearing triple in the bottom of the second inning as the Timberwolves scored nine runs in the frame and went on to beat the Hawks 17-5 in five innings to get the split.
Avrey Cherry, Ethan Stach and Tanner Franklin had two RBIs each for Lake City in the second game. Nate Bevacqua and Tadgh Ellwood had two RBIs each in the second game for Lakeland.
"Tanner locked it down early and added a couple of hits to help turn the order over," Criswell said. "Our approach was much better in the second game, that's for sure. The boys responded in the second game and never looked back. We needed that after our Game 1 performance."
