POST FALLS — What’s a little competition between friends, right?
The Post Falls boys 4x400 relay team of seniors Cobe Cameron, Trenton McLean, Tallan McCracken and Gio Carlino are hoping that it pays off with some gold at the end of this season.
Cameron won the state 5A 400 last year, diving across the finish line for his first title.
“I trained all last summer and went to Texas for the Junior Olympics trying to get better for this year,” Cameron said. “I was in the top eight in the 400 at nationals (48.47 seconds) and was an All-American, which was nice.”
On Tuesday, Cameron won the 400 at the Christina Finney Relays at Post Falls High, winning in 49.71 seconds. McLean was second in 50.47 and McCracken fourth in 51.42.
“Those guys push me every day in practice,” Cameron said. “Those are my best friends and we’re always talking to each other, pushing each other to get better. All in all, we want to win the 4x400 state championship the most.”
“Cobe and I have been running together since the second grade,” McLean said. “I used to be able to beat him, but since the third grade, he’s just been pushing me to be at my full potential. I’m really thankful for him and the rest of our coaches for pushing us during practices each day. They put us through some of the hardest workouts, and it really gets us prepared.”
The foursome was second at the Pasco Invitational last Saturday, finishing in 3:25.92, the third-fastest time in 6A this season.
“It’s super doable,” McLean said. “We just need to fix a few things, but I know we can run better than that. I couldn’t think of a better group of guys to win a state title with because they’re some of my best friends.”
The state record was set by Eagle High in 2011 (3:18.63).
“I want to win the 400 again, but I think we’ve got a great chance to win at state and break that record honestly,” Cameron said. “Last year, we were only two seconds from it, so if we can build back to that, and just be a little better. We can do it.”
Cameron has committed to run track and field at Boise State next year.
“Boise itself is such a good place,” Cameron said. “I really like it down there. Other places I visited, nothing really clicked like Boise did. I just knew it was the right place for me.”
McLean plans to become a firefighter after graduation.
“I’m kind of an adrenaline junkie and love the idea of jumping out of a helicopter and going to fight a fire,” he said.
Post Falls senior Chloe VanVolkinburg won the 100-meter dash, then set a school record in the 200, winning in 25.48 seconds as the Trojans claimed the team title, which was determined by adding the boys and girls team scores together.
The 4x400 relay at the Finney meet was a mixed relay, with Cameron, McLean, Reagan Hutchinson and Chloe Van Volkinburg teaming for the win for the Trojans.
"It was a really good day," Quesnell said. "The Christina Finney meet is a special meet to us, and we want to go out and perform to the best of our ability. And I was happy with how we performed today. We had a lot of good individual and team efforts today."
