PREP BASEBALL: Moore lifts Lake City past Post Falls

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Owen Moore had a two-run single to give the host Lake City Timberwolves a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning of a 12-9 win over the Post Falls Trojans in the first game of a scheduled Inland Empire League doubleheader on Tuesday. 

Jack Pierce and Owen Mangini had two RBIs each for Lake City, which scored eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 11-5 lead. 

Mike O’Connor had a two-run double in the sixth inning for Post Falls to cut the deficit to 11-8. 

“Offensively, we hit the ball really well,” Post Falls coach Kurt Reese said. “Defensively, we were plagued with some mistakes and walks and Lake City got some timely hits.” 

The second game was suspended with Post Falls leading Lake City 5-3 in the middle of the fifth inning. The game will be completed at a later date. 

“We made some adjustments and had some good at-bats in the second game,” Reese said. “We’re happy with where our offense is, but we’re coming into the home stretch and need to put it all together now.” 

Post Falls (6-10, 3-7 IEL) hosts Moscow for an IEL doubleheader on Thursday. 

Lake City (8-3, 7-2) hosts Coeur d’Alene in a league doubleheader on Saturday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Tyler Voorhees hit a double to ignite a three-run rally in the bottom of the third in the first game, then allowed two hits in the nightcap to lead the Vikings to an IEL sweep over the Bengals at Ted Page Field. 

“Tyler was just a spark plug today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Brandon Williams said. “He had four hits at the plate today and just went out and did his thing on the mound in the second game.” 

Junior Gavin Helms singled to score Harrison Trunkey-Evans to give Coeur d’Alene a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning of the first game. 

“Gavin just keeps doing a good job of getting to the baseball and getting RBIs, which has been huge for us,” Williams said. “We keep saying next man up, and they guys are buying into it. They’re picking each other up and playing really well right now.” 

Sophomore Jackson Hackett hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth for Coeur d’Alene (12-1, 10-1 IEL), which travels to Lake City for a doubleheader on Saturday. 

Lewiston is 8-13, 5-11.

MOSCOW — Wyatt Hartig singled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to score Tyson Izzo with the winning run in the first game for the Bears, who went on to sweep the Hawks in an IEL doubleheader at the Moscow School District Community Playfields. 

In the first game, Jace Taylor doubled to score Griffin Tamangi to tie the game at 5-5 in the seventh for Lakeland. 

In the nightcap, Hunter Avriett singled to score Tamangi in the sixth for Lakeland (4-12, 2-10). 

Dan Fitt had a three-run triple in the fifth inning of the second game for Moscow (12-6 8-4). 

Lakeland hosts Lewiston for an IEL doubleheader on Saturday at Gorton Field. 

Moscow travels to Post Falls for a league doubleheader on Thursday.

OSBURN — Senior James Moore hit a grand slam in the top of the fifth inning for the Tigers in a nonleague win over the Wildcats at Morehouse Field. 

Moore also had five runs scored and sophomore Ryker Brennan had three hits and four RBIs for Timberlake (8-2), which travels to Riverside of Chattaroy, Wash., today.
