PREP SOFTBALL: Peterson propels Lake City to sweep of Post Falls

POST FALLS — Sophomore Madeline Peterson struck out nine in the opener, and fanned seven in 2.1 innings in the nightcap, as the visiting Lake City Timberwolves swept the Post Falls Trojans 13-4 and 20-9 in Inland Empire League play Saturday. 

Peterson also went 3 for 5 and drove in four runs in the second game for Lake City (10-4-1, 8-1 IEL). 

“Madeline Peterson has been a force for us in the circle all season long and today was no exception,” Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. “She came out strong today and set the tone in game one in the circle.” 

Karsyn DeMent drove in four runs in the opener for Lake City, including a three-run double in the fifth inning.  

Layla Gugino went 6 for 9 on the day for the Timberwolves, KaeLee Kolden was 5 for 8 with seven RBIs and six runs scored. In the second game, Kolden hit a three-run homer as part of a 10-run sixth inning that erased an 8-7 Post Falls lead, and she finished with five RBIs in that game. Mariah Thomas was 5 for 9 with three RBIs and three runs scored. 

“Layla, KaeLee and Mariah all had great days at the plate,” Hensley said. “Overall as a team, we had good at-bats and put the ball into play when we needed to. I am really happy with our plate appearances today.” 

Natalie Stroud went 2 for 5 with three RBIs in the second game for Post Falls (2-6, 1-5), and Jaya Felix was 3 for 4 and scored twice. 

On Tuesday, Post Falls travels to Lake City for an IEL doubleheader.

RATHDRUM — Shae Jones struck out 12, scattered three hits, hit two home runs and drove in five runs as the visiting Tigers beat the Hawks in a nonleague game Saturday morning. 

Jones finished 3 for 5 with three runs scored for Timberlake (8-1). She hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a three-run shot in the fourth. 

Abby Helmholz had all three hits for Lakeland (5-5), including a double and triple. 

Timberlake plays host to Medical Lake on Tuesday in a doubleheader.

OROFINO — The visiting Lumberjacks dropped out of first place in the Central Idaho League after getting swept by the Maniacs, who moved into the league lead. 

Madison Thomas had four hits on the day for St. Maries (6-7, 4-2 CIL). 

Rilee Diffin hit two homers and drove in six runs in the first game for Orofino (10-2, 7-1). 

St. Maries returns to action at Priest River on April 21.
