ADMINISTRATION: Lack of empathy

| April 11, 2025 1:00 AM

“Oh shut up, silly woman,” said the reptile with a grin — “You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in!” Perhaps we should have listened more carefully before electing President Trump; we can’t say he didn’t warn us. He also promised to “Make America Great Again.” What makes America great? Our reputation on the world stage, our form of government, adherence to the rule of law, willingness to help those in need, or our advancements in industries and science?

Recently, international students have had visas revoked and have been imprisoned, and people in the immigration process are arrested and deported, both without due process. Organizations and programs providing life-saving aid to those in need are being shut down. Much more is happening, too much to mention here.

We face economic uncertainty stemming from recent tariffs. A growing economy has been decimated. Those who will be hurt the most are those who are least able to bear it. The number of unemployed individuals is expected to increase from the effects of tariffs and government employee layoffs. The tariffs will also cause worldwide hardship. The Republican Congress could use its powers to revoke the tariffs, but that seems unlikely.

What sort of leadership relishes retribution, creates fear among marginalized people within and outside its borders, and alienates former allies? We are witnessing a historic rupture of alliances and decline in trust for American leadership. Why is this? So that President Trump can be seen as a strong leader and the wealthy can receive their tax cuts? There appears to be a lack of empathy for the broader American public from this administration.
