PREP SOFTBALL: Gugino's big day leads Lake City to sweep of Sandpoint

SANDPOINT — Layla Gugino went 6 for 11 with three home runs, 13 RBIs and six runs scored as the Lake City Timberwolves swept the Sandpoint Bulldogs 17-5 and 23-9 in an Inland Empire League softball doubleheader Tuesday at War Memorial Field. 

Gugino hit two home runs and drove in five runs in the first game for Lake City (8-4-1, 6-1 IEL). She hit a three-run homer in the first inning and a two-run shot in the sixth. Teammate Kyla Smith also hit a two-run homer in the sixth.

Karsyn DeMent went 5 for 5 with two RBIs and three runs scored in the opener for the Timberwolves. 

In the second game, Gugino went 4 for 5 with eight RBIs and two runs scored. She hit a two-run single in the first inning, a three-run triple and a two-run homer in a 15-run third inning, and an RBI single in the fifth. 

Aaliyah Lopez had four hits, six RBIs and four runs scored on the day for Lake City. KaeLee Kolden drove in four runs in the second game. 

"We weathered the storm today ... literally," Lake City coach Jordyn Hensley said. "I am really proud of our offensive production. Layla, Aaliyah and Karsyn came up big for us at the plate."

Sandpoint is 1-11, 1-7. 

Lake City travels to Post Falls on Saturday for an IEL doubleheader.

KELLOGG — Shae Jones struck out 13, walked one and scattered three hits as the visiting Tigers beat the Wildcats in nonleague play at Kellogg Middle School. 

Prestyn Gardner, Emilia Landon, Sadie Green and Alannah Winland each drove in two runs for Timberlake (5-1). 

“We came out a little flat today — made some mental and physical errors,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “This young team is going to have some bumps along the way, but we need to learn from our mistakes and make adjustments. That being said, a win is a win.” 

Kellogg (0-4) travels to Priest River today for a Central Idaho League doubleheader.

ST. MARIES — Brieanna Winther struck out 10 as the visiting Loggers (5-0) beat the Lumberjacks (6-3) in nonleague play at City Park. 

Averie Baird tripled and scored on a single by Addyson Stewart in the fifth inning for St. Maries. Danika Sloper had two hits and scored a run. 

St. Maries travels to Timberlake on Thursday for a doubleheader.
