NIC SOFTBALL: Larney delivers walk-off in opener for Cardinals against rival CSI
COEUR d’ALENE — Freshman Katelyn Larney singled to score freshman Emily Hanchey with the winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift North Idaho College past Southern Idaho 5-4 in the first game of a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Lake City High on Saturday.
Kristine Schmidt, a sophomore from Coeur d’Alene High, struck out seven in the first game for NIC, which led 4-0 after two innings. CSI’s Anslie Yazzie hit a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the deficit to 4-3. Courtney Christianson hit a solo home run in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
In the nightcap, NIC (15-17, 7-11 SWAC) got RBI singles from Larney and freshman Charlie Stern, as well as a two-run pinch-hit home run by freshman Emma Wirt in the seventh, before eventually falling to the Golden Eagles 8-4.
Kyli Carrell and Ava Howell hit two-run home runs for CSI (22-13, 15-3) in the second game.
The teams play another doubleheader today at Lake City High starting at 11 a.m.
