PREP ROUNDUP: Coeur d'Alene goes 2-1 in opening day at Best of the Best tourney

REXBURG — Gianna Callari had 17 kills and seven blocks on the day for Coeur d’Alene, which opened the Best of the Best tournament 2-1 at Madison High. 

Coeur d’Alene fell to Hillcrest 25-21, 24-26, 15-11, then beat the Madison JV 25-20, 25-23 and Idaho Falls 25-21, 25-19. 

"We were a bit sluggish getting off the bus,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “However, I think the girls did an amazing job of regrouping and staying locked in for the remainder of the day.” 

Kaylee Paulson had 12 kills and five blocks, Paisley Goings 10 kills, 19 digs and four aces, Lizzy Hardy 25 assists, Bevin Green 24 assists and Gracie Legg 38 digs for Coeur d’Alene (17-4), which resumes the tournament today. 

Lake City opens with 

win over Selah 

SPOKANE — Camryn Woodman had six kills for the Timberwolves in a 22-25, 25-17, 15-8 win over the Vikings in their opening pool play match at the Sheridan/Welch Crossover Tournament at Ferris High. 

“We came out with great energy and made effective adjustments,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “Selah has some big hitters that caught us by surprise, but I loved our teamwork once we got things clicking on our side. We’re right where we want to be headed into Day 2.” 

Jess Wilson had nine kills, two blocks and four digs and Taylor Winey 11 assists, five digs and two aces for Lake City (11-4), which faces Mt. Spokane and La Salle today in pool play matches at Ferris High.

POST FALLS — Elliot Engles scored on an assist from Isaac Hines in the first half for the Panthers in an Intermountain League draw with the Bulldogs at The Fields. 

“We played like a Donkey in the second half,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “Grangeville played like a Clydesdale in the second half.” 

Coeur d’Alene Charter (9-0-2, 7-0-1 IML) travels to Bonners Ferry on Wednesday. 

Grangeville (2-2-3, 2-1-3) travels to Priest River today.

COEUR d’ALENE — Seniors Leah Cysewski and Kennedy Hartzell scored goals for the Timberwolves in a win over the Titans of Vancouver, Wash., at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex. 

It is the fourth straight win for Lake City (9-2-2), which travels to Lakeland to conclude the regular season on Tuesday. 

“We kind of went through a stretch where we weren’t feeling good and dealing with some injuries,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “I’m proud of our backline for sorting some things out. It was senior night, so it was good to see the seniors out with a win.” 

Union visits Coeur d’Alene today.
