1. North Idaho College trustee candidates face community at forum
With three of the five seats on North Idaho College’s nonpartisan board of trustees up for election Nov. 5, Kootenai County voters could shift the balance of power.
More than 200 people gathered Thursday night at the Salvation Army Kroc Center Theater to hear from the candidates in a forum presented by the Joint Chamber Public Policy Committee. ASNIC Student Government President Joseph Moran and ASNIC Vice President Blake Sanchez moderated the forum.
William Lyons and Rick Durbin will square off for the Zone 3 seat. In Zone 4, Eve Knudtsen looks to unseat incumbent Greg McKenzie. Mary Havercroft and Michael Angiletta are competing for the Zone 5 seat.
2. Street signs damaged after crash near roundabout by Post Falls High School
Several street signs are damaged following an incident at the Cecil Road and Poleline Avenue roundabout near Post Falls High School on Thursday morning.
Post Falls City Police Department responded to a white Chevy Tahoe that had driven onto the median at 9:46 a.m. Thursday morning, according to Sargeant Pat Eismann with PFPD.
The driver, an adult female, was detained at the scene and the vehicle was searched. While some evidence of inhalant use was discovered in the vehicle, there was not enough evidence to arrest the driver, said Eismann. She was instead issued a citation for inattentive driving.
3. Shoshone County takes over Silver Express shuttle service
The Shoshone County Commissioners have a self-imposed six-month deadline to determine the future of the Silver Express shuttle service.
On Wednesday, the commissioners met with Shoshone County grant administrator Colleen Rosson and made the decision to take full control of the bus service for the next six months.
The free transportation had been operating as a joint service between the county and Northwest Medical Transport. However, they recently told the county they would not be renewing their contract unless the county could provide additional monthly funding.
The county looked at a few alternatives, but after some discussions between Rosson, the Idaho Transportation Department and the Federal Transportation Administration, it was recommended that the county become the sole operator of the bus service.
