PREP SOCCER: Lake City boys clip Coeur d'Alene, close gap in IEL

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Jaelon Stimak-Eckman converted a penalty kick in the 32nd minute for Lake City, which beat Coeur d’Alene 2-1 in an Inland Empire League match at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex on Tuesday. 

Lake City (6-1-2, 4-1-1 Inland Empire League) and Coeur d’Alene (7-2, 5-1) are the lone teams in the 6A classification in the IEL. 

“We had an intense and hard-fought game tonight against a well-coached and determined Coeur d’Alene team,” Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. “Both sides played with incredible heart and determination right to the final whistle. Having coached many of these boys during club, I knew this game would be a battle, and I couldn’t be prouder of how they all performed tonight.” 

Lake City hosts Lakeland next Monday. 

Coeur d’Alene travels to Sandpoint next Tuesday.

RATHDRUM — Ethan Hunt headed in a corner kick from Luke Fritts in the second half to put the finishing touches on the Hawks’ nonleague shutout of the Dragons of Spokane at the Sunrise Rotary Fields. 

Ty VanMeeteren had nine saves in the shutout for Lakeland (3-4-3). 

“Our defense played well; it was nice to get Ty a shutout,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. 

Saint George's is 2-3. 

Lakeland plays host to Lewiston on Thursday.

BONNERS FERRY — Eli Blackmore scored five goals for the Badgers (9-1-1, 8-0 IML) in a win over the Tigers at Bonners Ferry High. 

Timberlake (1-6-2, 1-5-2 IML) hosts Priest River on Oct. 3.

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore goalkeeper Savvy Spencer had seven saves, including a stop on a penalty kick in the second half for the Timberwolves in an Inland Empire League win over the Vikings at Viking Field. 

“It was a good shot to the left, but she (Spencer) got a good jump on it and saved it,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “It was a great play by her.” 

Chloe Burkholder, Kennedy Hartzell and Ava Roberts had goals for Lake City (8-2-2, 4-2 IEL), which will host Game 1 of the 6A Region 1 best-of-3 series starting Oct. 12. Coeur d’Alene will host the second game Oct. 15, with an if-necessary game at Lake City on Oct. 17. 

Lake City and Coeur d’Alene are the only two teams in the 6A classification in soccer this season. 

“Hats off to Lake City,” Vredenburg said. “They showed up and wanted it more than us. They played better than us in every aspect of the game. We’ve got to show up and compete, and we just didn’t tonight.” 

Coeur d’Alene (2-10, 1-6) hosts Union of Camas, Wash., on Saturday. 

Lake City hosts Union on Friday.

NINE MILE FALLS, Wash. — Paige Rose, Kyndall Dolin and Addison Forsman each had a goal and an assist as the visiting Hawks blanked the Eagles in nonleague play. 

Ruby McIntosh and Ressa Saxe teamed on the shutout for Lakeland (7-2-1), which has posted its most wins in a season since 2016 (9-8-1). 

“We got a lot of kids playing time, and we were very vocal and connected on a lot of passes,” fourth-year Lakeland coach Kevin Rogge said. “We got the ball down the wings, got crosses in ... it was fun to watch.” 

Lakeside is 1-6. 

Lakeland travels to Lewiston on Thursday.

Bonners Ferry is 6-5, 4-2.
