Celebrate banned books Wednesday
POST FALLS — The Library Alliance of North Idaho will host a Banned Books Week celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at River City Lanes, 965 W. Seltice Way.
Banned Books Week, usually held the last week of September, began Sunday and will go through Saturday. The first Banned Books Week was held in 1982 in response to an uptick in books being challenged in libraries, bookstores and schools.
The annual event is a celebration of free and open access to information, bringing together book and literacy advocacy communities in support of the free exchange of ideas.
Current "banned" books include "Oryx and Crake" and "The Handmaid's Tale" by Margaret Atwood, "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison and "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" by Stephen Chbosky.
The Library Alliance of North Idaho event will take place in the restaurant/bar area of River City Lanes. A portion of pizza, sandwich and drink purchases will be donated to the alliance, a grassroots movement that supports local libraries while working to raise community awareness about library issues and fight against censorship.
