CLN: Plass’ proposal is impractical

| September 22, 2024 1:00 AM

Tim Plass’s Aug. 8 draft proposal, “Adult Access Only Restricted Areas,” is preposterous, unconstitutional and impractical.

Preposterous, as defined in the Oxford Dictionary: “Contrary to reason or common sense; utterly absurd or ridiculous.”

Unconstitutional, because intellectual freedom is the most fundamental of our personal liberties. As expressed in the First Amendment, and as manifested in the freedoms of speech, press and peaceable assembly, it is one of the cornerstones of our republic. It is a basic right that includes the freedom of thought, belief, expression and access to information. It includes the right to read, write and listen. And it includes the right to free speech and intellectual freedom from government restrictions.

Impractical, because there is no way to implement this hare-brained, rash, ill-judged plan without causing irreparable harm to our libraries. Which begs the question, is Tim Plass’s ultimate goal to destroy our libraries?
