PREP FOOTBALL: Lake City finishes off Gig Harbor

| September 21, 2024 1:15 AM

GIG HARBOR, Wash. — Lake City took advantage of couple of kicking game miscues by Gig Harbor to build a cushion, and the Timberwolves went on to post a 35-16 victory over the Tides on Friday night at Roy Anderson Field.

Avrey Cherry threw a pair of touchdown passes and ran for one for Lake City (2-2), and the Timberwolves intercepted three passes in the fourth quarter.

“We finished a game,” second-year Lake City coach Byron Hout said, noting his team was ahead at halftime in each of its two losses. “Guys stepped up and made plays in critical situations.”

Gig Harbor is 1-2.

Late in the first half, with the score tied at 7, a Gig Harbor punt snap caromed off one of the up-backs, and Lake City recovered at the Tides 11.

On fourth-and-4 at the Gig Harbor 5, Cherry hit a wide-open Caden Tony in the end zone for a 14-7 Timberwolf lead.

On the next possession, Lake City junior Dayton Fletcher blocked a Gig Harbor punt, and the T-Wolves took over at the Tides 10.

On third down, Cherry connected with Jacob Hill for an 18-yard score and a 21-7 halftime lead.

Gig Harbor scored on the first drive of the third quarter, then kicked a field goal late in the quarter to pull within 21-16.

But Lake City responded, Cherry scrambled for 15 yards on fourth and 7, and sophomore Brayden Van Leuven ran 14 yards for a TD on the next play for a 28-16 lead.

Braden Meredith and Garrett Leonard of Lake City ended Gig Harbor’s next two drives with interceptions, and Cade Fledderman had a pick-6 for the T-Wolves in the waning seconds.

Gig Harbor struck first when freshman Sawyer Hayes connected with DJ Darling on a slant route, and Darling zipped through and past the Lake City defense for a 93-yard scoring play.

Helped by a kickoff return by Caden Tony near midfield, Lake City answered with Cherry’s 29-yard keeper down the left sideline.

“Great job by Cherry making the reads, and the wide receivers ran great routes all night long,” Hout said. “It wasn’t the cleanest game, but when it counted the most, they made the throws and catches needed to score and get first downs.”

Lake City makes another road trip to Washington next week, traveling to Eisenhower of Yakima next Friday.

“Pretty tough four-game stretch for us,” Amos said. “What is nice is we were 0-4 and we did not waver; we got better this week. We were able to run the ball and eliminate a lot of errors.”
