CLN: Trustees are following the law
The many signatures put to the My Turn article of Sept. 12 are alarming. Apparently, the consignees of this post need to read Idaho Statute HB 710 that went into effect July 1, protecting our children from obscene materials at the libraries and schools.
There is no intellectual freedom assault, moral censorship, or undermining going on at the CLN board of trustees. How dare these people undermine the integrity, morality and intelligence of our governor, legislators and community taxpayers!
The CLN board members are doing what the law dictates. Adults are free to select any book in the sectioned off area for their children to read. This is total freedom. It is highly appropriate that children are protected from “smut” material so a parent may select what they deem appropriate. That includes parents who deem “smut” material to be OK for their children. Again, total freedom.
This post claims there has been no community input. This is not true. Clean Books for Kids has community-wide support. How about the majority of taxpaying voters who put these board members in the CLN? How about Idaho Statute HB 710, signed, sealed and delivered? This is hardly a “narrow set of values.” What appears narrow is the minds who put this My Turn article together. How embarrassing it must be to have done this.
I strongly encourage our fellow citizens to contact the board and give them a thumb’s up for doing their jobs. I will trust and listen to the words of our Sheriff Bob Norris on this issue rather than fear-mongering individuals against the CLN.
