KELLOGG VOLLEYBALL

Sept. 10

Kellogg d. Priest River

PRIEST RIVER — In a game where Priest River held a 2-1 lead, the visiting Wildcats managed to find a way to squeak out a five-set 3A Central Idaho League victory (27-29, 25-19, 25-18, 25-27, 10-15) on Tuesday night at Priest River-Lamana High.

It was a gutsy and oftentimes uneven performance from the ‘Cats, who nearly gave up the match after the Spartans rallied from a double-digit deficit in the fourth set before Kellogg put it away.

“We didn’t play great, at least not the way we had been playing,” Coach Stephanie Batchelder said of her team. Paige (Yrjana) and Jordyn (Stutzke) carried us in many way, they were amazing tonight.”

Yrjana finished with 11 kills, while Stutzke had three aces and 42 digs for Kellogg.

Sept. 12

Kellogg d. Grangeville

GRANGEVILLE — Dani Henrikson had 15 kills and two blocks for the Wildcats in a 15-25, 25-17, 25-14, 25-22 Central Idaho League win over the Bulldogs.

Paige Yrjana had seven kills, five aces, and 21 digs and Kam McDonald 15 assists for Kellogg (9-1, 4-0 CIL).

Senior Aubree Groth played an integral role for the Wildcats, dominating around the net.

“Aubree had six solid touches and one block,” Head Coach Steph Batchelder said. “She was killing it at the net, which was huge. She really had a stellar night.”

The Wildcats finished up the first half of their CIL schedule undefeated, while also getting all of their major road matches out of the way and coming out of it relatively unscathed.

Now, Batchelder will work on fine-tuning her squad in the latter half of the season before the district and state tournaments arrive.

“The thing about her serving tonight that really impressed me is that in practice we have been really drilling serving spots because that’s one way we want to be dominant as a team this year,” Clark Fork High head coach Lyndsie Kiebert-Carey said. “She (Aurora) served every spot that we told her — just impressive.”

Sophomore Nora-Jean Hoy had nine assists and seven aces, junior Piper Scarlett five aces of her own as Clark Fork scored the first 22 points of the second set in their 3-0 victory.

Sept. 12

KELLOGG FOOTBALL

Sept. 13

Kellogg 34, St. Maries 22

KELLOGG — The Wildcats needed to prove that they could put a whole game together and they did just that during their home opener against the Lumberjacks.

It was a wire-to-wire win for Kellogg, who was coming off back losses to open their season.

They started quickly after sophomore Evan Vindasius picked off Lumberjack passer Jack Barta and returned it to the one-yard line on the opening possession. Three plays later, sophomore quarterback Porter Lewis found the endzone on a designed run.

Kellogg led 20-14 at halftime after Lewis connected with receivers Ty Cheney and Radley McDonald for a pair of first-half scores.

McDonald, who finished with six catches for 86 yards, linked up with Lewis again on the opening drive of the third quarter for his second touchdown grab of the game.

St. Maries kept things interesting, pulling within four points before Kellogg's Andrew Lewis put the game away on a 20-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter.

The win put the Wildcats squarely in the mix for the Central Idaho League, which was believed to be a three-horse race between the Wildcats, St. Maries, and Grangeville – With the win, Kellogg has an inside track to finish no lower than second place if they win the remaining slate of conference games they are favored in.

Kellogg (1-2, 1-0) hosts Timberlake this Friday at Teeters Field.

WALLACE FOOTBALL

Sept. 13

Wallace 48, Lakeside 70

WORLEY — Friday will be a night that Head Coach Jared Young and the Miners will dwell on for the next six weeks.

After jumping out to a quick lead, Wallace let the Knights hang around and they made them pay for it, ending the Miners undefeated season.

Up 14 points early, Lakeside roared back to take a two-point halftime lead and never looked back, outscoring Wallace 34-14 in the second half, and handing the Miners their first loss of the season.

“I thought we didn’t play good enough defense,” Wallace coach Jared Young said. “We let the lead slip away and we’ve got to stay more mentally tough. We’ve got to battle adversity better. We had a chance to stay in the ball game, but we didn’t have clean snaps all night and didn’t catch the ball when we needed to catch the ball. We just need to tackle better and block better.”

Freshman Cooper Miller had another solid showing, finishing with 240 yards of total offense - throwing four touchdowns and running in another.

But the tandem of Tyson Charley and Jemari Peone was too much to overcome.

“We’ve got to make the most of our opportunities when we’ve got a chance,” Young said. “I think we started to figure some things out at the end of the game. That Tyson Charley, he’s a great athlete and he can run the ball. And we’ve got to play better against him.”

Lakeside and Wallace meet in the return matchup Oct. 25 in the regular season finale at Sather Field in Silverton.

Wallace (3-1) hosts St. John-Endicott this Friday at Sather Field.

ST. REGIS-MULLAN FOOTBALL

Sept. 13

St. Regis-Mullan 30, Arlee 28

ARLEE — The Tigers scored a huge win over the host Warriors during a pivotal Western Montana 8-Man divisional contest.

The Warriors had a shot to tie the contest late in the fourth quarter but failed the 2-point conversion.

The Tigers travel down I-90 to Superior this week to take on the Bobcats.
