Helpers: Crochet Connection

Among the books at the Community Library Network in Hayden, a long chain of crochet curled into a bookworm with googly eyes can be spotted. 

The crafty creation is the work of the Crochet Connection, a group of fiber artists of all ages that has grown from four to 30 members in the last few years. As they’ve gained more attention in the Hayden area, community members often donate yarn to the group.

Last year, the Crochet Connection donated about 250 handmade blankets to Hospice of North Idaho. Along with hats, scarves and quilts, Hospice of North Idaho valued the contributions at around $20,000. 

Executive Director Eric Ladwig said the comforting items “turn into huge blessings” for patients at the end of their lives. 

“The impact of these donations is enormous, and we take care of a lot of people who don’t have much,” Ladwig said. 

When members of the fiber art group come into the facility carrying large bags of their creations, Ladwig said he tries to imagine the amount of time that goes into making delicate and precise materials for hospice patients.
