WORLEY — Lakeside senior Jemari Peone has been waiting two years to catch some passes from his cousin Tyson Charley.

On Friday, the two connected — a lot — for a lot of yards.

Maybe, more importantly, a big league win.

Peone had 162 yards receiving on eight catches and scored three touchdowns for the Knights in a 70-48 North Star League showdown win over the Wallace Miners at the Marimn Health Coeur Center.

“I’ve been trying to get him out here for a while now,” Peone said. “I’ve been waiting a while for him to be my QB1. It’s my last year and I’m ready to be state bound with my little cousin and my whole team. It’s been a dream catching balls from Tyson. More deep balls, short routes, more wins.”

Charley, a junior, threw for 339 yards and ran for another 204 and four touchdowns for Lakeside (3-0, 3-0 NSL).

“It’s been fun,” Charley said. “The Peone boys (Jemari and his brother Hallah) are my favorite receivers. The Idaho coaches poll had them (the Miners) ranked higher than us, so we wanted to go out and play our game. Even though it was a rough first half, we stuck together and started playing Lakeside football.”

Lakeside led 36-34 at halftime, tying the game on a 15-yard touchdown run by Charley with 2:25 remaining in the half. On the two-point conversion try, the Knights took the lead on a reverse pass with Charley catching a toss from Preston Spotted Horse to take a 30-28 lead.

“These guys are coming out and executing perfectly,” first-year Lakeside coach Jerry Louie-McGee said. “One thing I love to see is that they’re staying tight-knit as a family. We’ve been pressing the importance of a brotherhood. We were down 14-0 early and it was 28-14 at one point, but the kids battled through adversity.”

Wallace (3-1, 2-1 NSL) regained the advantage on a 4-yard touchdown pass from freshman Cooper Miller to Wyatt Richey, but Lakeside took advantage of a short field as Charley scored on a 22-yard run with four seconds left in the half to take a 36-34 lead.

“Tyson has a motor on him,” Louie-McGee said. “We’ve got him in on everything, offense and defense and kickoff. He just wants to go out and compete and win. And he wants to do it with his brothers. Just watching him, he’s just a talented player. As a coach, you just sit back and watch and ‘you don’t know how he did that’. They all want to go out and do their job. As long as we keep our goals in mind, I think we’re going to go in the right direction.”

Wallace opened the scoring on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Miller to Julian Davis, then struck again on a 70-yard pass from Miller to Emmitt Myles to take a 14-0 lead five minutes into the game.

“I thought we didn’t play good enough defense,” Wallace coach Jared Young said. “We let the lead slip away and we’ve got to stay more mentally tough. We’ve got to battle adversity better. We had a chance to stay in the ball game, but we didn’t have clean snaps all night and didn’t catch the ball when we needed to catch the ball. We just need to tackle better and block better.”

Driving at the start of the fourth quarter, Miller was intercepted by Jemari Peone at the 3-yard line with Lakeside leading 64-48 with six minutes remaining.

“We’ve got to make the most of our opportunities when we’ve got a chance,” Young said. “I think we started to figure some things out at the end of the game. That Tyson Charley, he’s a great athlete and he can run the ball. And we’ve got to play better against him.”

Lakeside and Wallace meet in the return matchup Oct. 25 in the regular season finale at Sather Field in Silverton.

Lakeside returns to action Sept. 27 at Genesee.

Wallace hosts St. John-Endicott next Friday at Sather Field.
