PREP FOOTBALL: Coeur d'Alene bounces back from first loss

| September 14, 2024 1:20 AM

SUNNYSIDE, Wash. — One week after suffering a stunning loss, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings got back to looking like ... well, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in a 35-18 win over the Sunnyside Grizzlies in nonleague play.

"Great bounce back for us; we played disciplined football,” said Coeur d’Alene coach Shawn Amos, whose team was upset 13-6 at Lewiston last week. “After three weeks and 1,800 miles we are proud of how our boys responded.  If before the season you would have told me we would be 3-1 with our schedule we would have probably said we will take it. We get a bye at a good time and we are excited to get back to work.”

In the first quarter, backup quarterback Tanner Stern zipped a pass to his right to receiver Evan Williams, who zipped down the sidelines for a 65-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead.

Coeur d’Alene led the rest of the way.

With 45 seconds left in the half, Caden Symons guided the Vikings 67 yards for a touchdown, hitting 5 of 5 passes, the final one a 23-yarder to Daniel Shoup on a seam route for a 21-6 halftime lead.

Anthony Thompson ran for a pair of touchdowns for Coeur d’Alene, and Christian Young ran for one score.

Sunnyside is 0-2.

Coeur d’Alene returns to action Sept. 27 at Sandpoint.

EAST WENATCHEE, Wash. — On a night the Trojans offense sputtered, the defense came up big for Post Falls (3-0) in a nonleague win over the Wildcats (1-1) at Wildcat Stadium.

“What a defensive battle; our defense played outstanding,” Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said. “Adam Shamion, our defensive coordinator, and our entire defensive staff put a great game plan together. Canon McKeown, our middle linebacker ... Tyras Blake (defensive back) ... Chris Click ... Kyle Chamberlain ... Marcus Sanchez ... just the entire defense made big plays.”

The biggest defensive play came from senior defensive back Kyle MIller. With Post Falls leading 7-0, Miller chased down an Eastmont player on an end-around and stripped the ball from him at the 1-yard line. Instead of a touchdown on the play, the ball rolled into the end zone and out of bounds for a touchback.

Brandon Felix and Devin Burton scored on short touchdown runs for Post Falls, and CJ Jimmerson made a pair of big catches on the Trojans’ second scoring drive.

“Offensively, we turned the ball over several times and put the defense in a tough spot, but they continued to get the ball back to our offense," Bennett said.

Post Falls travels to Lakeland next Friday.

McCALL — The Tigers, searching for their first victory, put themselves in a position to win, but a rough stretch in the second half dropped them to 0-4 with the nonleague loss to the Vandals (3-0).

Timberlake fell behind 14-0, but battled back to within 14-13 at the half, and took a 21-14 lead in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Jonathan Hansen, who finished with 120 yards and two touchdowns on 28 carries.

But in the fourth quarter, the Tigers gave up a punt return for a touchdown.

On the next series, Timberlake snapped it over the quarterback’s head, and McCall-Donnelly recovered, drove and scored.

On the next punt, the snap hit the up back, and the Vandals took over with a short field and scored.

Timberlake scored with around a minute to go to pull within a touchdown, but McCall-Donnelly recovered the onside kick, and ran out the clock.

“We were kind of controlling it offensively, and we made a series of catastrophic errors,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “It’s tough; that’s a game we put ourselves in a position to win. We have progressed so much in our ability to run the ball.”

Ryker Brennan was 7 of 11 for 76 yards and two scores for Timberlake.

Timberlake travels to Kellogg next Friday.
