1. Nagel running for sheriff as independent

A Rathdrum resident is running for Kootenai County sheriff as an independent.

Lifelong Idahoan Justin Nagel said he aims to leverage his years of experience in Kootenai County during his campaign.

“I've spent my adult life investigating organized crime leaders after being a victim. I've seen their community grow while law enforcement silences victims like me. I know their leadership and our citizens," he said in a press release. "Over 26 years, I've gained extensive knowledge about law enforcement agencies, the sheriff position, internal practices, law, constitutional rights, and local law enforcement's activities."

2. Prescribed fire closures lifted

The Idaho Panhandle National Forests announced Thursday the area closure in place during prescribed fire operations on the Upper River Fuels Reduction Project has been rescinded.

Located in the Upper North Fork Coeur d Alene River basin, the project saw aerial ignitions Tuesday that resulted in about 400 acres burned.

On Sept, 8, helitorch ignitions on the Boulder Backcountry Project outside Bonners Ferry resulted in about 1,000 acres burned.

3. Annual suicide prevention and awareness walk this Saturday

Panhandle Health District's Suicide Prevent Action Network of North Idaho will host its annual suicide prevention and awareness 5K on Saturday at Riverstone Park.

The event is in remembrance of those lost to suicide, supports those who have lost someone to suicide, reduces stigma associated with mental health and connects community members to local resources, according to a press release.

Registration is free and begins at 8:30 a.m. The run starts at 10 a.m. Commemorative shirts, socks and dedication signs will be available for purchase.
