Nagel running for sheriff as independent

A Rathdrum resident is running for Kootenai County sheriff as an independent.

Lifelong Idahoan Justin Nagel said he aims to leverage his years of experience in Kootenai County during his campaign.

“I've spent my adult life investigating organized crime leaders after being a victim. I've seen their community grow while law enforcement silences victims like me. I know their leadership and our citizens," he said in a press release. "Over 26 years, I've gained extensive knowledge about law enforcement agencies, the sheriff position, internal practices, law, constitutional rights, and local law enforcement's activities."

Nagel said he has identified weaknesses within the KCSO and said he can do better.

"What my fellow citizens want, but what they need, is information. I also know I can deliver the changes we need to have a healthy relationship with our law enforcement community," he said in the release.

Nagel believes his message of accountability will resonate with many residents "who have been harassed, abused, or ignored by their law enforcement for decades."

His mission is to run a sheriff’s department that puts the community's needs first, the release said.

He said he is qualified for sheriff because he has been "surrounded by remarkable individuals — those with strong minds and compassionate hearts — who inspire me daily to serve our community more effectively."

"While I can achieve my goals independently, a strong community is essential in combating corruption and establishing a long-term standard for public servants," the release said. "My experiences, coupled with my unwavering commitment to justice, equitable treatment, and the vision of a safer, better Kootenai County, will empower me to provide exceptional leadership for the public as sheriff.”
