ADVERTISING: Advertorial — Uncorking a new chapter: Adventures in wine education
As I write this week's column, I find myself in a place I never quite expected to be at this stage in my life: back in school. But not just any school — I'm embarking on a two-year Master's program in wine at the Culinary Institute of America and am currently in Napa, California for the launch of my program. This journey has me reflecting on the importance of lifelong learning and the excitement of new beginnings, no matter where you are in life.
First, let me dispel a myth: you're never too old to go "back to school." In fact, I'd argue that the richness of life experience only enhances the learning process. This program isn't just about adding letters after my name; it's about deepening my understanding of an industry I'm passionate about and bringing fresh ideas back to our community at Base Camp Wine & Co.
Many of you know me as the face behind the counter, always ready with a recommendation or a story about a particular vintage. But the world of wine is vast and ever-changing, and to truly serve our community, I believe in continually expanding my knowledge. This program offers hands-on learning experiences and networking opportunities that will allow me to bring even more value to our interactions at the shop.
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking: "Is she going to come back speaking in wine jargon and telling us we've been drinking all wrong?" Let me assure you, that's not the case at all. If there's one thing I hold true, it's that wine shouldn't be pretentious or intimidating. At the end of the day, enjoying wine is a deeply personal experience. Our palates are all unique, and what delights one person might not appeal to another. That's the beauty of it!
While I have immense respect for those who pursue Sommelier titles and dedicate their lives to the minutiae of wine, our goal at Base Camp has always been different. We want to create an approachable environment where you can learn just enough about what you like (and don't like) to expand your palate and discover new favorites. It's not about impressing anyone; it's about finding joy in exploration. And for those who are our more advanced wine connoisseurs, we still remained committed to providing you with the very best, and unique wines!
Running a wine shop is about so much more than just selling bottles. It's about creating connections — between people, places, and stories. This course and the industry ties I'll develop through it will deepen our connections to the broader wine world. We're aiming to expand beyond being just a "wine and gift shop" to become a true hub for wine education and appreciation in our community.
I'm thrilled about the possibilities this education will bring to enhance your experience at Base Camp. We're exploring ideas like launching a podcast to share insider knowledge, hosting more meet-and-greets with winemakers and farmers, and organizing trips to visit the people who put their hearts and souls into the wines we love. The goal is to bring the vineyard to you, even if you can't make it to wine country yourself.
As you read this, I'll have already had some incredible experiences. I've visited Matthiasson Wines to learn about vineyard development from Steve Matthiasson, a true innovator in sustainable viticulture. At Frog's Leap Winery, I've delved into organic farming techniques with John Williams, a pioneer in the field. Michael Silacci at Opus One Winery will have shared insights into cutting-edge winemaking techniques that blend tradition with innovation.
But it's not all about what happens in the vineyard and cellar. I will have also explored the fascinating world of wine preservation and the cork industry with PJ Awe from Amorim Cork America. And at Domaine Carneros, CEO Remi Cohen will have provided a masterclass in running a world-class winery operation.
These experiences are just the beginning. With each class, each visit, and each conversation, I'm gathering knowledge and insights that I can't wait to share with you. Whether you're a longtime wine enthusiast or just beginning to explore beyond your go-to bottle, I'm excited to use what I'm learning to help you discover something new.
So, the next time you stop by Base Camp Wine & Co., don't be surprised if you find me bursting with new stories and recommendations. This journey is as much yours as it is mine. Together, we'll continue to explore the wonderful world of wine, one glass at a time. Here's to learning, growing, and savoring life's pleasures — cheers!
