Coeur d'Alene man sentenced for trafficking cocaine

A Coeur d'Alene man was recently sentenced for trafficking in cocaine and other offenses, a press release said Friday.

The charges stemmed from an incident Nov. 20, 2023, when Derek Guy St. Louis, 41, had an active warrant for telephone harassment. Officers confronted St. Louis after he walked outside his home to check his mailbox.

St. Louis was arrested, but not before he resisted and attempted to retreat into his home, the release said. Officers found about 4 ounces of cocaine, drug paraphernalia and a large amount of cash on St. Louis.

After bonding out of jail and failing to appear in court more than once, St. Louis was arrested in May and remained in custody through his June jury trial and sentencing hearing Aug. 21.

St. Louis’ criminal history includes convictions for DUI, eluding peace officers, battery and possession of controlled substances, the release said.

District Judge John Mitchell sentenced St. Louis to a 15-year prison sentence with parole eligibility after four years for trafficking in cocaine and a year in jail for possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting/obstructing officers.
