MOSCOW — Idaho starting quarterback Jack Layne suffered a broken collarbone in Saturday’s 24-14 season-opening loss at No. 3 Oregon and will be out “for a while,” Vandals coach Jason Eck said Monday.

Layne, a redshirt sophomore making his third career start, had surgery over the weekend, Eck said.

Jack Wagner, a redshirt freshman who saw some action late in Saturday’s game, will get the start on Saturday at Wyoming (0-1), Eck said.

Layne, who started for the injured Gevani McCoy when Idaho played Idaho State each of the last two seasons, was injured when he got caught up in an Oregon pass rush late in the fourth quarter.

Layne finished 11 for 25 passing for 168 yards and a touchdown, with one interception against the Ducks. He was sacked four times.

He also ran for a 4-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to pull the Vandals within 17-14.

Wagner was 0 for 2 with an interception on Saturday. He also ran twice for five yards.

Wagner played once last year, in relief of Layne in the Idaho State game, going 4 of 5 for 41 yards passing. He also ran three times for 42 yards, with a long of 29.

“We’re fired up about him; he’s got a lot of ability it’s a great opportunity for him,” Eck said. “We've had our No. 2 quarterbacks play pretty well the last two years. Jack was the first scholarship quarterback that we recruited, since we arrived. We’re excited to see him in action, and have the utmost confidence in what he can do.”
