| September 2, 2024 1:00 AM

COEUR d'ALENE —  A North Idaho College board of trustees candidate forum is scheduled for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Salvation Army Kroc Center Theater.

It is being put on by the Joint Chamber Public Policy Committee, representing the Coeur d'Alene Regional Chamber, Hayden Chamber of Commerce, Post Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and Rathdrum Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We believe it is imperative for the community to engage in this process and make informed decisions about the leadership of North Idaho College,” said Linda Coppess, president/CEO of the Coeur d’Alene Regional Chamber in a press release. “The future of our workforce and the economic health of North Idaho depend on a strong, accredited NIC.”

The release states that NIC is "an essential institution for our community, providing education and training that supports the economic vitality of North Idaho. NIC plays a pivotal role in preparing our workforce and offering accessible education to residents."

It goes on to say that, "Since 1933 North Idaho College has continually provided traditional students and adult learners with access to quality, affordable local higher education opportunities. Even during times of crisis, the staff and educators’ commitment to the student experience, student success, and overall excellence have been unwavering. NIC also provides our high school students with a local opportunity to complete two years of college while in high school through their dual enrollment program, allowing them to enter a four-year school as a Junior when they graduate from High School, and dramatically reducing the cost of a college education."

"A robust educational system is vital to the health of our business community," the release said.

The Joint Chamber Public Policy Committee encourages community members to attend the forum. This November, voters will be able to select trustees in zones 3, 4 and 5.

"It is essential that voters are well-informed about the candidates who are committed to addressing the accreditation issues and ensuring that NIC can continue to serve as a cornerstone of our community's future," the release said.

The forum will be moderated by a neutral party.

“It is time for the leaders in our community to step up and take a stand for education and North Idaho College. We can no longer afford to remain silent on this important business issue, as it impacts our workforce as well as economic development. Get to know the candidates and where they stand on important issues, then cast an informed vote,” said Christina Petit, Post Falls Area Chamber of Commerce.
