Genesis Prep d Wallace 

The top-seeded Jaguars defeated the second-seeded Wallace Miners 17-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 15-6 to win the 2A District 1 championship Thursday night at North Idaho College. 

Genesis Prep (13-9) advances to the state 2A tournament Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at Jerome High.  

The Jaguars will likely learn their first-round opponent on Sunday. 

Genesis Prep, which swept Wallace (13-9) in the semifinal round on Saturday. trailed two sets to one in the championship match, and was down 17-12 in the fourth set. Had Wallace won, the teams would have played a second championship match Saturday at The Courts at Real Life in Post Falls. 

But the Jaguars stormed back to win the fourth set, then jumped out to a big lead early in the deciding set, and the party was on. 

“This is what we’ve wanted since our freshman year,” said senior outside hitter Madi Cooper, who had 16 kills, 16 digs and five aces. “This year we finally made it, and it’s just not real; it’s so exciting.”

Wallace 54, Lakeside 46 

SILVERTON — Senior Julian Davis returned an interception 48 yards for a touchdown with 2:01 remaining as the Miners rallied with 22 points in the fourth quarter to beat the Knights and win the North Star League title at Sather Field in Silverton. 

Freshman quarterback Cooper Miller scrambled to score on a 6-yard touchdown run with 2:16 remaining to tie the game at 46-46. Davis intercepted the next play from scrimmage to give Wallace the lead for good. 

Lakeside recovered a squib kick, but a Hail Mary pass from the Wallace 40 on fourth down fell incomplete. 

Lakeside junior Tyson Charley returned the opening kickoff of the second half 55 yards to give the Knights a 34-22 lead. Braydon Greensky caught an 8-yard touchdown pass from Charley to make it 40-22 earlier in the third quarter. 

Wallace (8-1, 5-1 NSL) and Lakeside (6-2, 4-2) await their playoff fate this weekend.

KELLOGG CROSS COUNTRY  

Oct. 24 

PINEHURST — The Kellogg boys won the 3A District I/II championship on Thursday at Pinehurst Golf Course.  

The Wildcats finished with five of the top seven runners at the meet.  

Priest River’s Brayden Lamanna was the individual champion at the meet.

KELLOGG FOOTBALL

Priest River 64, Kellogg 26 

PRIEST RIVER — The Spartans, who played a JV schedule a year ago, clinched a state 3A playoff berth with a win over the Wildcats at Priest River High. 

The Wildcats porous defense couldn’t contain the Spartans’ ground attack.

Kellogg ends their season 3-6.  

Priest River will play Aberdeen this week in the opening round of the 3A Playoffs.
