POST FALLS — Just like 2020, Coeur d’Alene Charter found itself in the semifinal round.

Junior defender Liam Hughes scored in the 19th minute for the second-seeded Panthers, who held off the seventh-seeded American Falls Beavers 2-0 in the first round of the state 4A boys soccer tournament at The Fields at Real Life on Thursday.

Coeur d’Alene Charter (16-0-2) will play third-seeded Teton (14-2-0) in a semifinal game today at 12:30 p.m. at The Fields.

“I was very happy with our first half performance,” fourth-year Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Craig Daigle said. “We moved the ball around and were getting chances. Liam had a beautiful header off a corner to get us on the board. We were sloppy in the second half. It’s something we need to clean up to be competitive against Teton.”

Junior midfielder Cruz Portellas scored in the 79th minute for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which outshot American Falls 16-6.

American Falls (13-6-1) will play sixth seed Bonners Ferry (13-6-1), which lost 1-0 to Teton.

First half — 1, Charter, Liam Hughes (Isaac Hines), 19:00. Second half — 2, Charter, Cruz Portellas (unassisted), 79:00.

Shots on goal — AF 6, Charter 16.

Saves — AF,  unknown, 9; Charter, Mattis Macmillan 6.
