PROP 1: Don’t be fooled

| October 25, 2024 1:00 AM

Would you head to the polls this November if you knew your vote could be thrown in the trash? Of course not.

But if Proposition 1 passes at the ballot box, that could be the case next election.

That’s because Proposition 1 is a deceptive, backdoor plan to forever change our election system — replacing “one person, one vote” with a new scheme called ranked-choice voting.

Ranked-choice voting is a time-consuming, confusing, permanent change to how we elect our public officials — a system that takes valid, legal ballots and throws them in the trash as a feature. These are votes that don’t count toward the final outcome.

In every election where ranked-choice voting has been tried, it has resulted in trashed ballots. The first time ranked-choice voting was used in Alaska, more than 15,000 ballots were trashed. In Maine, more than 8,000 ballots were trashed. And in New York City, 140,000 ballots were trashed.

Why all the trashed ballots? If you fill out the new confusing ballot incorrectly — trashed. If you decide you don’t want to rank candidates and vote against your conscience — trashed. The end result is that Idahoans will be forced to vote for candidates they might not otherwise support.

Proposition 1 ends the process Idahoans have used to elect representation since statehood. It is an unnecessary change that will have disastrous results for our state.

I hope you will join me in voting NO on Proposition 1.

REP. JORDAN REDMAN
