PREP VOLLEYBALL: Coeur d'Alene tops Lake City in opener of district title series

| October 20, 2024 1:12 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Lake City pushed top-seeded Coeur d’Alene to a fourth set for the first time this season, but the host Vikings responded with a 25-19, 25-17, 22-25, 26-24 victory over the second-seeded Timberwolves in the opener of a best-of-3 series for the 6A District 1 championship Saturday at Viking Court.

Coeur d’Alene (25-6) travels to Lake City (18-12) on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a chance to wrap up a trip to state. If Lake City wins, the deciding match would be Thursday at Coeur d’Alene.

Senior Paisley Goings celebrated her 18th birthday with 10 kills, 16 digs and three aces for Coeur d’Alene. Kaylee Paulson added 13 kills and two blocks, Gianna Callari and Aiva Reed 10 kills and two blocks each, Lizzy Hardy 20 assists and 14 digs, Gracie Legg 16 digs, Hannah Shafer 11 assists, Bridget Maiani five aces and two blocks.

“Lake City did a good job of adjusting to our offense,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “Our setters were able to use our options, feeding our middles and back row. Our defense was solid. Aiva and Gianna played a well-rounded game; they closed the block and were smart on offense. Paisley and Kaylee swung away and did a good job of changing up their shots.”

Jessalyn Wilson had 13 kills, 14 digs and a block for Lake City. Camryn Woodman added six kills, two blocks and two aces, Taylor Winey 31 assists and three aces, Lola Jeanselme 17 digs and an ace.

“Things got fun once we found our confidence in set three,” Lake City coach Michelle Kleinberg said. “Coeur d’Alene has been one of the top teams in the state all season long so it’s going to take a more consistent effort on our side of the net to stop them. We’re up for the challenge, though, and look forward to giving it another shot on Tuesday.”
