PREP FOOTBALL: Lake City takes lead early, but falls in inaugural game at Lewiston's field

| October 19, 2024 1:15 AM

LEWISTON — Senior Avrey Cherry scored on a 16-yard touchdown run to cap a 13-play opening drive to give visiting Lake City the lead with 5:01 remaining in the first quarter, but the host Lewiston Bengals scored 38 straight points to capture the 38-21 nonleague win in the inaugural game at the P1FCU Sports Complex on Friday.

“We didn’t have a good first half at all,” Lake City coach Byron Hout said. “The second half was better for us. Their quarterback is a very good player, and they have a lot of good receivers. They had an awesome environment.”

Lake City junior Jacob Hill caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Cherry with 5:59 remaining to make it 38-14.

Lake City (4-4) hosts Post Falls next Friday.

Jeremy Yoder threw for two first half touchdowns for Lewiston (5-3), which hosts Lakeland next Friday in a matchup of 5A IEL unbeatens.

Moscow outgained Timberlake 229-106 on the ground, clinching the three-team IML title after dropping down a classification in football-only this fall.

“We just had a hard time stopping the run,” said Timberlake assistant coach Brian Kluss. “We were trying to stop them with five guys in the first half and went to six and they just ran all over us in the second half. We struggled stopping the run for sure.”

Timberlake (2-6, 0-1 IML, ranked 13th in this week’s MaxPreps.com rankings, travels to Bonners Ferry next Friday. The top 12 teams in 4A advance to the state playoffs starting in two weeks.

Moscow, which beat Bonners Ferry 28-14 last week, is idle next Friday.

“We just had a hard time in the field position game tonight,” Kluss said. “Moscow played really well and we didn’t have our best night for sure. That’s the best I’ve seen them play. They played really well at the right time.”
