| October 16, 2024 1:00 AM

Mahlon James “Dennis” Collar, age 81, passed away peacefully Oct. 12, 2024, at his home in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, surrounded by his children after a courageous battle with cancer. Dennis’s warmth, humor and hardworking spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Dennis was born in Syracuse, N.Y., on Oct. 27, 1942. He grew up in Tully, N.Y., along Route 11A. At the age of 7, he got his first job picking potatoes for a farmer, earning 7 cents a bushel. He worked tirelessly on the farm until he was 16, learning the value of hard work and dedication at an early age. This strong work ethic would stay with him throughout his life. In December of 1958, Dennis used the money he had saved from his hard work to run away to California in search of his best friend, Bill. That following summer, Dennis paid a lawyer to have Bill’s parents become his legal guardians, showing his loyalty and determination to care for those he loved.

In November 1960, Dennis joined the U.S. Air Force, proudly serving his country during Vietnam. He was stationed in Southeast Asia, where he courageously faced the challenges of war with bravery and resilience. Dennis was deeply proud of his service and carried a strong sense of patriotism throughout his life. His time in Vietnam shaped him into a man who valued duty, honor and the sacrifice required to protect his country and loved ones.

Known for his kind heart, sharp wit and unwavering dedication to his family, Dennis also had a tireless work ethic that never wavered. He found great joy in fishing, which brought him peace and allowed him to create lasting memories with family and friends. Whether on quiet waters or with a line in the lake, fishing was his way to unwind and connect with the world around him.

Dennis was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 46 years, Nancy Collar, who passed away in 2015.

He is survived by his daughters, Dawnetta Collar and April Unsell; his adopted son, Robert Koppas; his seven grandchildren: Tomas Perez, Mariah Linam, Dominic Perez, David Perez, Cody Perez, Kylie Rachetts and Brooke Roberts; and seven great-grandchildren: Waylon Rachetts, Lucille Rachetts, Noah Roberts, Ryleigh Mae Roberts, Maddox Roberts, Asher Perez and Blake Linam.

Dennis’s legacy of love, generosity, laughter and hard work will continue to inspire all who knew him. May he enjoy endless fishing trips in heaven with a peaceful heart, knowing the love he gave will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Dad. We love you forever.

A private family-only service will be held. Please visit Dennis’s online memorial and sign his guestbook at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
