COEUR d’ALENE — One play later, everything changed for second-seeded Lake City on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Kai Delio scored a golden goal in the 96th minute as the Timberwolves beat the top-seeded Coeur d’Alene Vkings 2-1 in overtime in Game 1 of a best-of-3 6A District 1 championship series at Viking Field on Saturday.

“They played a long ball to Kai that created some confusion,” first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “It’s unfortunate, but there was a mad scramble that they were able to get a touch on.”

Lake City (10-1-2) can clinch a berth to state with a win in Game 2 on Tuesday at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex. If Coeur d’Alene (9-3) wins, the teams will play Game 3 at Coeur d’Alene High next Thursday.

"It was a hard-fought battle from start to finish," first-year Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. "Lukas (Ruchti) made save after save and without his efforts, the game could have taken a very different turn. I'm extremely proud of how our team continued to fight and play for each other."

Lake City senior Jacob Molina scored in the second minute to give the Timberwolves a 1-0 lead at halftime. Coeur d’Alene tied the match on a free kick by Kason Pintler in the 49th minute.

The teams split matches this season, with Coeur d’Alene winning 1-0 at home on Aug. 31 and Lake City winning 2-1 at home on Sept. 24.

“Both matches have been a battle this season,” Harmelink said. “After a brutal start, we started to play more fluid. We kind of ruined the day by not being able to take advantage of our chances, but it was a battle like it was always going to be.”

Coeur d’Alene 2

COEUR d’ALENE — Throw out the records when rivals collide.

Especially in postseason play.

Second-seeded Coeur d’Alene, which entered the game 2-11-2, notched the game-winner on a golden goal by freshman Audrey Linder in the 82nd minute to upset the top-seeded Timberwolves in overtime of Game 1 of the 6A District best-of-3 championship series at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the girls,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We had two big injuries in the game, but all of the girls stepped up.”

Lake City defeated Coeur d'Alene 2-0 and 3-0 during the regular season

Team captain Kaylie Smart was unable to play due to an ankle injury. Chloe Murphree injured her shoulder in the second half for Coeur d’Alene, which can clinch a berth to state with a win Tuesday at Viking Field.

“This year, with all of the injuries we’ve had, the girls never quit,” Vredenburg said. “They showed a lot of heart today.”

LEWISTON — Junior Natalee Rose scored the lone goal for the fourth-seeded Hawks in a loss to the top-seeded Bengals in a semifinal match in the 5A Region 1 tournament at Walker Field.

Lakeland finishes 8-7-1, the most wins for the program since 2016, when the Hawks finished 9-8-1.

Sandpoint 2

Moscow 0

MOSCOW — Adele Michael and Marlee McCrum both scored second-half goals as the third-seeded Bulldogs upset the second-seeded Bears in a 5A Region 1 semifinal match at the Moscow School District Community Playfields.

Michael's goal was assisted by McCrum, which started off the scoring for Sandpoint. In between the posts, senior Liliana Brinkmeier was busy with a handful of late Moscow attacks. The Bears had a ball deflect off the post and Brinkmeier saved a high-flying ball in the final three minutes to clinch the shutout.

"Moscow played a great game and they are always a tough opponent," Sandpoint coach Alan Brinkmeier said. "Our girls have been focusing on moving off the ball more and opening as much space as possible on a smaller field."

Brinkmeier said during halftime, he told his players to play for each other, and that's exactly what the Bulldogs ended up doing.

"It was a solid game from everyone, some playing with nagging injuries to some playing with ankle injuries from yesterday," Brinkmeier said. "Everyone played their part and we couldn't have done it without all our players, our fans that traveled, and the coaching staff."

Sandpoint will travel to top-seeded Lewiston for the title match on Wednesday at Walker Field.
