• CROSS COUNTRY

MARYSVILLE, Wash. — Now is the time of the season when that target on the backs of the Coeur d’Alene boys cross country team gets larger.

And on Saturday, so did the competition.

Coeur d’Alene, ranked 14th nationally in the latest DyeStat.com rankings and second in the Northwest, captured the boys elite team title at the Nike Hole in the Wall Invitational on Saturday, beating Jesuit of Portland, the third ranked program and Sehome of Bellingham, Wash., (third in the Northwest) at Lakewood High.

“We’re right where we want to be right now,” first-year Coeur d’Alene coach Emry Carr said. “The boys showed up and did exactly what we wanted to do. We had some great leadership up front and just powered through.”

Senior Max Cervi-Skinner was second in 14:40.1 for Coeur d’Alene, which finished with 115 points. Jesuit was second with 138 and Sehome third with 138.

“Max has been really well for a while, but has just been consistent over time,” Carr said. “He had an amazing kick today and was fifth going into the final 400 meters and barely got edged out. But his consistency and work he’s put in this season is really paying off for him.”

Senior Zack Cervi-Skinner was fifth (14:53.1), sophomore Wyatt Carr ninth (15:03.2), freshman Wyatt Morgenstern 68th (16:01.9), sophomore Gabe Heule 73rd (16:10.2), sophomore Davey Dance 97th (16:25.7), freshman Rowan Henry 107th in 16:34.4).

Owen Powell of Mercer Island (Wash.) won the elite race in 14:40.

Coeur d’Alene’s girls were 15th in the elite race. Jesuit won the girls team title.

“Last year, the girls were in the silver race and this year, they got to compete against the best of the best,” Carr said.

Junior Dakota Keyworth was 53rd (19:18.6), junior Olivia May 60th (19:26.9), senior Sonja Jones 77th (19:43.7), freshman Lillie Dance 118th (20:49.4), senior Lana Fletcher 122nd (20:54.8) and senior Olivia Fishback 142nd (21:50.6).

“Our team came out with a lot of determination today,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “In both matches our offense was dialed in. We were passing dimes and that allowed us to run a fast-tempo offense. Defensively our block was getting hands on nearly every attack, and our diggers were picking up everything all over the floor. It was fun to watch.”

No. 3 seed Post Falls travels to No. 2 Lake City on Thursday in a loser-out match to open the 6A District 1 tournament.
