Hayden Lake Marathon takes the scenic route

HAYDEN — Despite chilly morning temperatures, runners in Saturday morning’s Hayden Lake Marathon couldn’t have asked for better race conditions.  

“This is absolutely perfect running weather,” said Deidre Rambur, who ran in Saturday’s quarter marathon event. “The entire course was just perfect.” 

Rambur completed the quarter marathon alongside her friend, Jenny Schillinger.  

“It felt amazing,” Schillinger said. “I loved all the different fall colors in the trees. It was a beautiful run.” 

The Hayden Lake Marathon, presented by Mountain West Bank, is an annual race around Hayden Lake that attracts runners from across the Pacific Northwest region — and beyond.  

David Salters flew from Oklahoma to complete his first half marathon with family members, who live locally.  

“It was fine the first 10 miles, but that last stretch was a bit of a grind,” Salters said. “But it felt great to get that first run under my belt.” 

Many runners also commended the work done by volunteers, who made the race possible. 

“The volunteers gave great support on the course,” said Ellen Bunke, who ran the quarter marathon. “The course itself was great, not too difficult.”  

Cade Bamrick, 25, of Kalispell, Mont., took first place overall in the marathon race with a time of 3:26:05. Kaeloni Neville, 34, also of Kalispell, took first place among the women at 3:40:13. A total of 65 people completed Saturday’s marathon.  

Brandon Workman, 46, of Portland, Ore., placed first overall in the half marathon race at 1:22:19, and 27-year-old Josie Brown of Hayden placed first among the women for the half marathon at 1:33:29. A total of 257 people ran Saturday’s half marathon. 

CJ Verploegen of Hayden was first overall in the quarter marathon race with a time of 45:57. Jaymi Williams of Ellensburg, Wash., was first place among the women at 47.17. A total of 142 people ran in the quarter marathon race.  

Clayton Vandyke of Coeur d’Alene finished first overall in the 5K race at just 14 minutes, while Brooklyn Shell, also of Coeur d’Alene, was first of the women and second overall at 17:11. A total of 163 people competed in the 5K event.
