POCATELLO — If Ella Wilson felt nervous heading into her first state high school golf, she didn't show it.

Wilson, a freshman from Coeur d'Alene High, shot a 3-under 73 to take the lead after the first day of the state 6A girls golf tournament at Highland Golf Club on Friday.

Wilson, who won the state 13-14 Junior Amateur championship in August, leads five others — including defending individual champion Ella Arnzen of Timberline — who are tied at 78.

“She’s just dialed in right now,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. “It was her third round on the course, so she had a good gameplan and didn’t try to do too much. She just went out, golfed and let the scores work out. She had a lot of good putts and put herself into good position to score. She’s excited, but she’s got another 18 holes tomorrow.”

Coeur d’Alene, which finished runner-up to Rocky Mountain, is second after the first day in the girls tournament with a 332. Rocky leads with a 317.

“We’ve got some room for improvement,” Lake said. “It might seem like a lot, but we’re right there. We’ve got a good course management plan about how to score tomorrow. The girls are ready to go all-in tomorrow to catch Rocky for sure.”

Coeur d’Alene’s boys are tied for fourth with a 319, 21 shots back of Boise, which leads with a 298.

"We knew there was going to be five teams within a few shots of each other,” Post Falls boys coach Chase Bennett said. “There’s some teams on our heels and a few right in front of us. Boise played incredible today and to have a round like that, it’s going to be tough to catch them. It’s a lot of ground to make up, but it’s high school golf, so anything can happen.”

Coeur d’Alene freshman Ben Focke is tied for 10th individually with a 76.

“We had a lot of shots on the green today,” Bennett said. “The team with the best short game is probably going to win this thing.”
