PREP FOOTBALL: Saints stun previously unbeaten Lakeside in OT
WORLEY — Coeur du Christ wide receiver/defensive back Ben Connelly might have had his senior moment on Friday night.
Not only on offense, but defensively to boot.
After Greg Hayes ran for a touchdown in overtime, Connelly caught a two-point conversion pass from Hayes to give the Saints a 60-52 lead.
Then, after Lakeside answered with a touchdown, Connelly batted down a pass attempt on the two-point conversion to give the first-year program a 60-58 win over the previously unbeaten Lakeside Knights at the Marimn Health Coeur Center.
Sophomore Jon Denke ran for two touchdowns and returned a kickoff for a touchdown for Coeur du Christ, which opened the season with a 54-32 loss to the Knights in the program’s inaugural game on Aug. 23 in Worley.
“It was an incredible team win,” Coeur du Christ coach Kellen Clemens said. “The boys showed an incredible amount of grit and perseverance to pull this out against a very talented, well-coached football team.”
Hayes ran for two touchdowns, and threw a touchdown pass to Denke with five seconds remaining to force overtime.
Connelly also caught a TD pass from Grant Clemens for the Saints, and Joe Urbina ran for a touchdown.
Coeur du Christ (2-4, 2-2 NSL) faces Wallace next Friday at Sather Field in Silverton.
Lakeside (5-1, 3-1) faces Clark Fork at the Coeur Center next Friday.

MOSES LAKE, Wash. — Post Falls had designs on getting off the bus, playing fast and getting on to its 6A Inland Empire League schedule at home next Friday against Coeur d’Alene.
Moses Lake, meanwhile, had other ideas.
The Trojans fumbled the opening kickoff, one of five turnovers forced by the Mavericks on the night in a loss at Lions Field.
“It was not quite what we wanted to do,” Post Falls coach Blaine Bennett said. “We wanted to play fast and well, but it was a disappointing start. We had a hard time moving the ball and just had a lot of mistakes. We just need to move on and get better going into next week.”
Moses Lake forced three turnovers in the first quarter and took a 21-0 lead on a 21-yard interception return by Carter Anderson.
Senior Devin Burton scored on a 4-yard run to put Post Falls on the scoreboard late in the first quarter.
Moses Lake quarterback Brady Jay threw for five touchdowns and ran for two more in the win.
“They’ve got an excellent quarterback and are a fast team,” Bennett said. “But we turned the ball over too many times, and you can’t do that against good teams.”
Post Falls (5-2) hosts Coeur d’Alene next Friday, and Moses Lake (5-1) hosts Eastmont of East Wenatchee, Wash., a team Post Falls beat 14-7 on the road on Sept. 13.
