Community members are invited to go “bowl-istic” next weekend at Gizmo-CDA.

A fundraiser benefiting the pottery studio at Gizmo is set for 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 19 in the makerspace at 283 Hubbard Ave., Suite 102, in the Hedlund Building on the North Idaho College campus.

The event is free, though attendees can spend $20 to purchase one of more than 250 handcrafted ceramic bowls and fill it with ice cream. Folks can also bid on additional pieces created by potters and ceramicists from Coeur d’Alene and Spokane.

Proceeds will benefit the pottery studio at Gizmo.

“We have so many bowls that potters got excited about making,” said Maggie Schenk, a volunteer pottery instructor. “It’s really encouraging.”

Schenk said Gizmo gave her an opportunity to pick up pottery again after years away from the craft.

“I got in after I retired and I just loved getting my hands dirty,” she said.

When it comes to pottery, Schenk said she’s more of a technician than an artist.

“I like to make functional stuff that I can use in my home,” she said. “I like making things my family and friends will enjoy. That’s my motivation. But there are people who come to Gizmo as a student who have never done it before, and I can tell immediately that they have that artistic knack.”
