PREP ROUNDUP: Lake City's Kunkel claims title at Gorge meet

GEORGE, Wash. — Lake City senior Hazel Kunkel won the girls Large School race at the Live Nation Invitational, finishing in 19 minutes, 29.54 seconds at the Gorge Amphitheater on Thursday. 

Post Falls senior Kaylynn Misner was runner-up, freshman Angelique Averette sixth, leading the Trojans to a third-place finish out of 10 teams. 

Lake City won the team title with 58 points. 

Lake City sophomore Sam Reade was the top local finisher in the boys Large School race, finishing third in 16:54.80. 

Timberlake sophomore Caleb Royce won the boys Small School race in 16:48.18, leading the Tigers to a runner-up finish out of 11 teams. 

The final stretch to the finish line included a 80-meter climb from the stage area to the top of the amphitheater according to Timberlake coach Shawn Lawler.

PRIEST RIVER — The visiting Panthers (12-0-2, 10-0-1 Intermountain League) wrapped up the league title and top seed to the 4A District 1-2 tournament with a win over the Spartans (6-7-1, 5-6-1) at Priest River High.

Coeur d’Alene Charter will face the winner of Monday’s match between Grangeville and Orofino in a semifinal game at The Fields on Tuesday at 11 a.m. 

Priest River will face Timberlake in a loser-out game on Monday at The Fields. 

Coeur d’Alene Charter concludes the regular season at St. Maries at PotlatchDeltic Field.

PRIEST RIVER — Senior Lydia Lehosit recorded a hat trick for the Panthers in an Intermountain League win over the Spartans at Priest River High. 

Junior Reagan Meine had two goals and an assist for Coeur d’Alene Charter (8-2-3, 8-0-2 IML), which faces the winner of a match between Grangeville and St. Maries in a semifinal game in the 4A District 1-2 tournament on Tuesday at The Fields in Post Falls. 

Senior Claire Leahy, normally a midfielder/defender, had one save for Coeur d’Alene Charter, which will be the top seed to districts.

“Our normal keeper aggravated an injury in warmups, so we were down a keeper before the game started,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Stacy Smith said. “One of our selfless seniors stepped into fill the role. Claire had a few great plays in goal to keep a clean sheet for her final senior league game. I’m very proud of her and her teammates are incredibly grateful.” 

Priest River (0-10-1, 0-9-1) faces Bonners Ferry on Monday at The Fields in Post Falls.
