PREP SOCCER: Lakeland boys bow out in regional opener
• BOYS
RATHDRUM — After two ties in the regular season, Lakeland coach Nick Haynes knew his fourth-seeded Hawks were going to be in for a test — home or away — when fifth-seeded Lewiston came to Sunrise Rotary Field on Tuesday to open the 5A Region 1 boys soccer tournament.
It was a test that the Hawks didn’t pass.
Lakeland senior defender Gerard Breyer scored in the 50th minute of the second half to even the match at 2-2 before Lewiston sophomore Wyatt Umfleet scored the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute as the Bengals upset the Hawks 3-2.
Lakeland finishes 3-7-5.
Lewiston (3-9-3) travels to top-seeded Sandpoint on Saturday.
“Lewiston just played with more energy that we did today,” Lakeland coach Nick Haynes said. “I thought we started well and both team had their chances in the first half. We tied them twice and knew it was going to be a battle. Lewiston worked hard and deserved to win. They played with a little more energy than we did today.”
The teams tied 0-0 at Walker Field in Lewiston on Sept. 5, and 1-1 in Inland Empire League play at Rotary Field on Sept. 26.
Lewiston is in its first year in the 5A classification after moving from 6A at the start of the season.
“We’ve got a young team and return all but two players,” Haynes said. “Hopefully they’ll keep working hard and we’ll make some strides next year.”
