Wullenwaber, Van Leuven help Lake City run over Sandpoint

| October 5, 2024 1:25 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Senior Gabe Wullenwaber and sophomore Brayden Van Leuven each rushed for more than 100 yards, and the Lake City Timberwolves used a punishing ground game to beat the Sandpoint Bulldogs 20-14 for homecoming in a nonleague football game Friday night at Van Troxel Field.

Wullenwaber rushed for 138 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns on 22 carries for Lake City (4-2). Van Leuven ran for 129 yards on 16 carries.

The Timberwolves threw just six passes.

“That was pretty special,” Lake City coach Byron Hout said of the run game. “The offensive line got great push. Brayden and Gabe ran their hearts out, and everyone was believing in blocking.

“That's the way to make a statement,” Hout added. “We wanted to control the line of scrimmage, and we did that.”

Tight end/fullback Garrett Leonard caught a play-action pass from Avrey Cherry and ran it in from 27 yards out for the game’s first score.

Sandpoint is 3-4.

“The kids played their hearts out,” Hout said. “Really proud of the kids, proud of the way they played for each other and the entire community.”

Lake City travels to Coeur d’Alene next Friday to open 6A Inland Empire League play.
