PREP FOOTBALL: Lakeland turns the momentum, downs Timberlake

| October 5, 2024 1:10 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — After a closely contested first 20 minutes, a muffed punt opened the floodgates for visiting Lakeland against district rival Timberlake on Friday at Van Tuinstra Memorial Stadium.

Leading 7-6 late in the first half, Timberlake forced a Lakeland punt, but fumbled the return, allowing the Hawks to score two plays later on a 48-yard touchdown pass from Haydon Benson to Jace Taylor to grab a 14-7 lead at halftime.

Senior Lovie Weil ran for three touchdowns, all in the second half of the Hawks 35-6 win over the Tigers.

“They were able to run the ball against us pretty well and started taking control in the second half,” Timberlake coach Kelly Amos said. “I’m proud of the way our kids played and wish we could take back some of those mistakes. When you play good teams, mistakes are amplified so much.”

Timberlake senior Jonathan Hansen scored on a 2-yard touchdown run to make it 7-6 in the second quarter. Hansen finished with 111 yards rushing.

Lakeland (5-2) returns home to face Sandpoint in an Inland Empire League game on Oct. 18.

Timberlake (2-5) hosts Moscow on Oct. 18 in an Intermountain League game.
