PREP SOCCER: Soph Soumis shines for Lake City boys

• BOYS 

COEUR d’ALENE — Sophomore Oliver Soumis had a goal and two assists, all in the second half, for the Lake City Timberwolves in a 5-0 Inland Empire League win over the Lakeland Hawks at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex on Tuesday. 

“Our boys showed exceptional control in the first half, maintaining possession and keeping the ball in our half a majority of the time,” Lake City coach Chaz Donovan said. “Although scoring started slow, we picked up the pace in the second half, continuing our dominance and netting four more goals. Oliver had an outstanding performance off the bench. It was just a collective effort by everyone, and I’m extremely proud of how we have come together as a team and are playing for each other.”

Lake City (7-1-2, 5-1-1 IEL) travels to Sandpoint on Saturday. 

Lakeland (3-5-4 1-4-3) travels to Sandpoint on Thursday.

SANDPOINT — Senior forward Kason Pintler had two goals and two assists, sophomore Grant Johnson four saves for the Vikings in a nonleague win over the Bulldogs at War Memorial Field. 

Senior forward Ronan Sternberg had two goals for Coeur d’Alene (8-2), which fell 4-1 at Sandpoint on Sept. 21 in a nonleague game. 

“Honestly, it was good to come away with a clean sheet,” Coeur d’Alene coach Robbie Harmelink said. “Our defense from front to back was great and we played one of our more complete games of the year. I’m really proud of the effort and intensity that the boys brought to this match.” 

Coeur d’Alene hosts Moscow on Thursday. 

Sandpoint (7-4-2) hosts Lakeland on Thursday.

RATHDRUM — The Timberwolves (10-2-2, 5-2 IEL) closed out the regular season with a shutout of the Hawks (7-4-1, 3-4-1) in an Inland Empire League match at Sunrise Rotary Field.

Lake City will host Coeur d’Alene on Oct. 12 in Game 1 of a best-of-3 6A Region 1 championship series.
