Boyd T. Hand, 93
Boyd was born to Jim and Nelly Hand in Osborn, Idaho. They moved to Hayden Lake when Boyd was a very young boy. He loved Idaho and spent eight years at Hayden Elementary, starting school there the first year it opened. He spent a lot of time fishing and picking huckleberries.
He was a big brother to six siblings: Jeanie Pistorious (deceased), Ruthie Hand (deceased), Amy Walter, Hayden Lake; Carol Barton, Post Falls; James Hand, Nampa, Idaho; and John Hand, Hayden Lake.
Boyd joined the Air Force when he was 16. When he returned home on his first furlough, he discovered his mother was in the hospital giving birth to his youngest brother, John, 17 years younger.
Boyd leaves behind four children: Jerry Hand in Peoria, Ariz.; Boyd James Hand in Kansas City, Kan.; Mona Hand in Pueblo, Colo.; and Lisa Hand in Vienna, Austria.
Boyd retired from the Air Force after serving his country for 20 years. He then worked another 20 years for Western Union as a district manager. He also spent a lot of time playing poker, which he loved. When he retired, he had more time for his beloved wife and family. He had 10 grandchildren and was always ready to lend a helping hand when called upon. He also let his children know how proud he was of them and how much they were loved.
He started picking huckleberries much again. His grandson, Jason, practically carried his 6-foot 6-inch body out of the huckleberry patch when he sprained his ankle. Another time, picking huckleberries on a very hot day, Boyd sat down to rest. A policeman came along and asked Boyd what he was doing. He told Boyd to get up and go to his car, telling him he had no business in the hot sun. Boyd stood and began walking UP the hill. When the officer asked him where he was going, he said he had to get his mother. During this time, Boyd and his mother helped to start the Unity Church in North Idaho. He was always very proud of this fact.
Boyd's wife, Barbara, lovingly helped him live to 93 years of age. He passed from this life in complete peace and love. She was a gift and devoted her life to him. She always gave him love and care. His happiest years were spent with her. He loved her dearly and also her children.
There will be a celebration of life Oct. 5, 2024, at 1 p.m. at the Hayden Lake Eagles, 1520 West Wyoming Ave., Hayden Lake, Idaho.
