GIRLS GOLF
HAYDEN LAKE — Led by freshman Ella Wilson’s 8-over-par 79, the Coeur d’Alene Vikings girls golf team won the Sue Mitchell Invitational on Monday at the Hayden Lake Country Club.
Coeur d’Alene finished with a score of 340, one shot ahead of Sandpoint.
“We've had an awesome regular season, and now we look to carry our positive momentum to the postseason,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said.
Originally, it appeared as if Sandpoint had won the event when the scores read that Sandpoint finished with 339 strokes compared to Coeur d'Alene's 340.
Bulldog senior Raegan Samuels, noticing an error in her score when it was posted by tournament officials, voluntarily corrected it from 85 to 87, which meant the Bulldogs were actually one stroke short of the Vikings.
"The message of today is how important one stroke is, can be, in team golf," Sandpoint coach Mike Deprez said. "Honesty and integrity are integral to the sport of golf and were exemplified by Raegan."
Coeur d’Alene, Lake City and Post Falls will vie for state berths Thursday at the 6A Region 1 tournament at the Coeur d’Alene Golf Club.
Lakeland, Sandpoint, Lewiston and Moscow will do the same Thursday at the 5A Region 1 tournament at The Links Golf Club in Post Falls.
