ISP making presence known during holidays
The Idaho State Police is partnering with local agencies statewide to conduct high-visibility patrols enforcing impaired driving, aggressive driving and other traffic violations during the holidays.
Efforts will focus on reducing injury and fatality crashes during the pre-holiday travel period, targeting impaired drivers and supporting DUI enforcement, a press release said. These initiatives also bolster criminal interdiction efforts, aiming to disrupt the flow of dangerous drugs and other crimes during the holiday weekend.
“With increased traffic volumes comes an increased need for vigilance behind the wheel,” said Lt. Colonel Fritz Zweigart. “We urge everyone to slow down, buckle up and never drive under the influence. Together, we can prevent needless tragedies and make this holiday season safer.”
According to the Idaho Transportation Department, in 2023, there were over 300 crashes statewide during the Thanksgiving holiday. Many of these collisions resulted in severe injuries or fatalities.
“Every driver has a role to play in road safety,” Zweigart said. “By driving sober, following the speed limit, and staying alert, we can reduce crashes and save lives.”
Safety tips for holiday travel:
Drive sober: Plan for a sober ride when alcohol is involved.
Buckle up: Seat belts save lives and are your best defense in a crash.
Avoid distractions: Focus on the road and put away your phone.
Prepare for weather: Check forecasts, allow extra travel time, and keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
