Turkeys more than good eating

COEUR d’ALENE — Let’s talk turkey: It was a banner year for Turkeys & More.

The nonprofit raised a record $71,000 so it could give away 2,096 turkeys, estimated to feed more than 10,000 people on Thanksgiving. 

“We had a lot of help from a lot of folks,” said Nancy Nelson, Turkeys & More president.  

The organization, joined by many volunteers, handed out turkeys in the cold and rain Friday to about 800 people via a drive-thru format at Unity Center of Spiritual Growth. About 1,200 more were distributed for pickup at food banks and social service agencies around Kootenai County. 

Nelson said recipients were grateful and joyful as they were handed turkeys weighing 10-15 pounds. And, of course, it's about more than just a good meal. It's about the spirit of giving and helping others.

“They felt cared for by their community,” she said. “They’re happy. We're happy. We get to do it all again next year.” 

Fundraising topped projections, and turkeys cost less this year. 

“We’ll go into next year with money in the bank,” Nelson said. 

Volunteers with the Coeur Group, North Idaho College wrestlers and Slick Rock Tanning and Spa had a big impact on the program’s success, Nelson said. 

“Those three really helped us,” she said. 

Founded by Evalyn Adams, Turkeys & More has been around nearly 10 years. Its theme is “Fight Hunger, Feed Hope."  

Adams, who has remained involved in organizing the giveaway, is retiring, with a celebration lunch set for Dec. 12 at Capone's Restaurant at the Ponderosa Golf Course. 

“We will miss her expertise and connections to the community,” Nelson said. “She has been the heart of Turkeys & More for many years.”
