HREI to celebrate Native American Heritage Day

The Human Rights Education Institute is hosting activities, crafts and storytelling celebrating the history of local tribes on "Native American Heritage Day" from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Guests can learn how to make authentic fry bread and create their own Indian taco. Students from North Idaho College Indigenous Studies program will be on hand to teach bead crafts. 

Attendees can also learn about native foods, Water Potato Day and the importance of Lake Coeur d’Alene stewardship by the Coeur d'Alene Tribe.

"Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron" and "Spirit Untamed" movies will be shown throughout the day with popcorn and light refreshments served. 

"In the Spirit of Truth and Reconciliation, the Human Rights Education Institute pays homage to the indigenous people, Schitsu’umsh, Coeur d’Alene Tribe, a people that are still here and bring to light their ancient heritage, and the land on which the Institute is located," a press release said.

HREI is at 414 W. Fort Grounds Drive.
