Two people died in a house fire in the Mica Flats area Sunday night.

Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Undersheriff Brett Nelson said firefighters and law enforcement responded to a call reporting a possible explosion and fire at about 7:25 p.m. in the 8600 block of W. Carnie Road.

He said the home was fully engulfed when they arrived, and it took several hours to extinguish the fire.

During the initial search of the property, a victim was found. A second search a few hours later resulted in a second victim being found in the rubble, Nelson said.

The Idaho State Fire Marshal's Office, assisted by KCSO, is investigating the cause of the fire.

The identity of the victims was not released.

Mica Kidd Island Fire District and Worley Fire Protection District responded to the blaze. The home was a total loss. No other buildings were damaged.

Firefighters returned to the site Monday to review the scene and to be sure the fire was out.
