One dead, several injured following fatal crash in Bonner County
Idaho State Police is investigating a two-vehicle fatality crash that occurred at 8:35 a.m. Friday morning on U.S. 95 near Elmira, south of Bonners Ferry.
According to a press release from ISP, a 61-year-old male from Moyie Springs was traveling southbound on U.S. 95 in a blue 2011 Dodge Ram pickup truck. The driver of the Dodge attempted to pass multiple southbound vehicles by moving into the northbound lane, resulting in a head-on collision with a black 2008 Ford Edge traveling northbound. The Edge was driven by a 33-year-old female from Otis Orchards, Wash.
A juvenile passenger of the Ford Edge died at the scene, ISP said. The driver of the Ford Edge, a 33-year-old female passenger and a second juvenile were transported to an area hospital via ground ambulance. The driver of the Dodge was also transported to an area hospital.
The highway was blocked intermittently for about three hours Friday morning.
ISP is also seeking witnesses to aid in the investigation of a crash that killed 56-year-old Jesus Castillo of Coeur d'Alene around 6:40 p.m. Tuesday night.
A 75-year-old man from Cocolalla was traveling northbound on Highway 41 when he failed to stop for a red light at the West Prairie Avenue intersection, according to police. His vehicle hit a Toyota Prius driven by Castillo, who was traveling west on Prairie Avenue.
A GoFundMe page has been started to support Castillo's family and help with funeral expenses.
"Jesus was a remarkable person, always willing to lend a helping hand," the GoFundMe page read. "He had a deep love for God and his family, and his presence will be profoundly missed."
Police ask that anyone who was in the area between 6:30 and 7 p.m. who witnessed the crash, anyone with information about the crash or anyone with dashcam footage of the intersection during or shortly before the crash come forward.
