Verne Scoman, 91

Verne Stanley Scoman, 91, of Coeur d’Alene, was peacefully ushered into heaven Nov. 9, 2024. He lived with Alzheimer’s and spent his final year at Creekside Inn Memory Care. “Stan” was born Dec. 6, 1932, in Salinas, Kan., to Phillip Anthony Scoman and Agatha “Irene” (La Coe) Scoman. After a short marriage, Irene moved with her three young children: Donald, Patricia and Stan, to be closer to family. They moved to the San Fernando Valley in California, where Stan and his siblings would spend the rest of their childhood. During those years, his mom remarried, and Stan was blessed to have his stepfather, Maitland Eastman, in his life. Stan graduated from Van Nuys High School, Class of 1950. Upon graduation, Stan began working as a machinist for Zero Corporation in Burbank, Calif. On Dec. 8, 1952, Stan was drafted into the U.S. Army and was deployed to serve in Korea, where he was responsible for repairing, maintaining and operating one of four machine guns. After returning home from war in September 1954, Stan found his job at Zero was held for him while away in Korea. In the spring of 1955, Stan met Patsy Stovall while visiting (from Texas) her aunt and neighbor to the Scomans. They married July 31, 1955. In 1959, they moved and filled their home in Chatsworth with four children: Darrell, Karen, Loraine (Teeny) and Russell. 

Stan is appreciated for his laughter and jokes with family and friends — creating sentimental nicknames and being a practical jokester. An avid Dodgers fan, he followed the team since 1958. He also had an extensive collection of vinyl records. These records included a large genre from big band, gospel, ballads, early rock, country music and, of course, his favorites, the standards. In 1991, after raising their children, Stan, Patsy and Zero Corporation relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah. Stan retired in 1997 after investing 47 years at Zero Corporation. Following retirement, Stan and Pat moved to Coeur d’Alene in 2019 to be closer to their daughter, Karen, and son-in-law Dennis and grandkids. 

In addition to his parents and siblings, Stan is preceded in death by his son, Darrell Scoman.

Stan is survived by his wife, Patsy; his daughters, Karen (Dennis) Hubbs, Loraine (Teeny) Scoman; his son, Russell (Lisa) Scoman and daughter-in-law Crystal Scoman. Stan leaves behind his grandchildren, Jared and Lane Hubbs, Ryann and Shane Tostenson, Rory Scoman, Nick and Cameron Scoman, and step-grandchildren Ethan Smith and Shenise Smith from his late son Darrell and precious great-grandchildren as well as nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.
