High schoolers compete in North Idaho College Math Contest
High schoolers from across Kootenai County gathered on the North Idaho College campus Tuesday to compete in NIC’s 41st annual Math Contest.
The competition featured multiple divisions, with students competing in both junior and senior categories, along with a team competition that saw schools going head-to-head for top honors.
In the senior category of Division 1, Coeur d'Alene High School’s Atlas Zastrow finished in first place, John Kennedy from Lake City High School took second and Maddox Le from Coeur d'Alene High School placed third. Noelle Murphy, also from Coeur d'Alene High, received an honorable mention.
The junior category in Division 1 saw Kourtri Johnson from Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy secure first place, Allen Kibler from Coeur d'Alene High School following in second and Colton Lundwall of Post Falls High School in third.
Lake City High School took home first place in the Division 1 team competition.
In Division 2, STEM Charter Academy students swept the senior category, with Layla Haugen winning first place, followed by Rush Gustafson in second place and Ryan Liu in third.
Division 2 also saw a sweep by STEM Charter Academy in the junior category, with Konner Knoll claiming first place, Daniel Gourley taking second place and Adley Garwick finishing third.
STEM Charter Academy also took home the Division 2 team competition.
“We’re always impressed by the dedication these students bring every year,” NIC math professor Susanne Bromley said in a Tuesday news release. “It’s such a fun event and I can’t wait to see next year’s group of bright young minds.”
